Hudler To Russia

July 29, 2009

This morning while walking the golf course in Grand Blanc covering the Buick Open Pro-Am, I happened to interview Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland on hole number two.  Holland hit a great golf shot onto the green, then putted it in for birdie.  But that wasn’t the highlight of the hole.  I asked Holland about Jiri Hudler’s arbitration and he said the hearing is tomorrow.  When I pushed even further about Hudler’s future with the Wings, Holland replied, “My expectation is he’s going to Russia.  We’d like him to stay, but obviously that’s something that the KHL (Kontinental Hockey League)  has to decide.  If they let him play, I think he’s gone.”  Holland also said he’d like to sign a player or two before training camp starts in September, but there’s little he can do considering the money the Red Wings spent on Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen.  Holland knows he will have to “move some kids in this year” meaning we will see guys up from Grand Rapids taking spots on the roster.  We will miss Jiri’s upbeat attitude in the locker room and more importantly his energy on the ice next season.  We wish him well.

YELLOW TIGERS KARATE SCHOOL

July 16, 2009

Have you ever wondered what would happened if you, your family member, or your friend was attacked on the street?  How would you react and would you be able to protect yourself?  So many people think it will never happen to me, but you know the old saying, better to be safe than sorry.

Yellow Tigers Inc. located on 4859 Michigan Avenue in Detroit teaches children as young as three, as well as 60 year old adults, how to protect themselves if they ever get in trouble.  I witnessed 14 year old Asia Bradley fight off three guys that came at her with a fake gun, a knife, and their hands.  Asia handled all three “attackers” in class and was the only one left standing.  Asia’s been taking karate lessons for four years and says she feels more confident in school and can speak up when called upon.  This young lady can pack a mean punch and I do not envy the guy or girl that ever attacks her.

Aryn Grayeski, mother of three, says she put all of her children in Grand Master Fort’s classes to give them more self-confidence and to teach them discipline.  Aryn sees the benefit of karate because her children are doing well in school, have an activity to do all year round, and it keeps them off the street.  Eva Salcedo has a special needs child, 11 year old Salvador, who is autistic.  Eva says after putting Salvador in karate, she saw a boost in his confidence.  This is a sport that is tailor-made for special needs individuals to teach them focus, discipline, and patience.  These children were very respectful, they listen, and they enjoy what they are learning.
