Are Allegations Against Michigan Football Program Legit?

When Michael Rosenberg and Mark Snyder’s article in Sunday’s Detroit Free Press came out it over the weekend it took me be surprise.  First of all, because it takes a lot of guts to speak out about a program and a head coach as big as Michigan and Rich Rodriguez and secondly because you never hear of this type of story, EVER.  After attending Rich Rodriguez’s weekly press conference this morning in Ann Arbor, I have to admit, I feel like I know more of the story.  Rodriguez stands by the fact the he, his staff, and everyone involved in the Michigan Football program have abided by all the rules and complied with all NCAA hourly requirements.  He spoke fondly of his long-time strength and conditioning coach Mike Barwis.  Rodriguez said Barwis will open up Schembechler Hall for players that want a little extra time in the gym any day of the week.  He also said that Barwis goes to church with some of the players on Sundays.  Rodriguez spoke about the allegations for more than 15 minutes, but in the middle of his press conference, he broke down in tears.  He said how he loved his players like his family and that he would do anything to see them succeed in the classroom, more so than on the football field.  He pointed out that under his staff, this team has the highest GPA (grade point average) than any other Michigan football team has ever had.  His players have been fantastic in summer workouts, in study halls, and meetings.  Rodriguez also mentioned the fact that two freshman had come to his office asking if what they said to these reporters was wrong.  Rodriguez said, “No.”  The freshman told their coach that they just told reporters they were working hard and wondering why it was being misconstrued.  Rodriguez told his team to put this negative bump in the road behind them and focus on Saturday’s game against Western Michigan.  The football players that spoke today said they want to win this season and that they are working hard with and without the coaches to get this program back to greatness.  The University of Michigan is doing their own internal investigation on the allegations and once all the evidence is collected, they will turn it over to the NCAA.

I am having a problem about these allegations just now coming out 5 days before the first game. If this was truly happening, why wasn’t this broke when fall pratice began on the 10th of August. Why now? I am not a “Rich Rod” full supporter just yet, becasue of being a Michigan fan for over 35 years and having a season of 3-9. But, at some point we have to let this “Non-Michigan Man” get into his program in order to see if he truly can be worth the millions that UofM is paying this man. We can’t fire him now (unless it is clear cut) before he even gets a second year of his players under him. We stuck our necks out already so give the man a chance.
I am excited about the new talent and the beginning of the season. Let’s not damn the program before it even gets started!

Firstly, your take on the real deal is enough for me….secondly, when a coach makes a conscious choice and statement to ecourage good grades ahead of anything else…they certainly get my kudos! And, this team appears to have the GPA to stand behind that, according to the coach.

Finally, according to your blog info, this coach is really standing behind what the players are saying to the media, maintaing player support and team cohesion. Wow….that’s a statement in and of itself.

There may be a gray line in many things; let’s hope that this investigation leads to a clearing of charges and better things ahead! (And I say that as a graduate of University of Illinois…now residing in my rival Big Ten University state, Michigan!)

I am from WV and I must say that I have heard this story before from MR. Rod, but in a different state and to another ball team, I believe they were called the ‘ MOUNTAINEERS ‘….. Basically just about the same words and probably the same tears….These young men were told how much he loved them and that their academics came first because he wanted them to succeed MR. Rod sure does know how to make everyone think that he is so sincere, just don’t turn your back or you will have a knife sticking out of it……yep. same story, same tears and just a different ball club…..

Would you please discourage Bernie from his video inserts which he claims to be sports related and to be entertaining ( vis-a-vis, Ironman?) on his evening sports cast. Just give us sports reports and news and skip the videos. Or better still, let Katrina give the sports. She does her job very well. Please do not force me to switch to channel 7. We like the evening news crew you have
    Thank you, Don Mason
